About us

John Daltons & Sons Ltd is a leading grain and agricultural merchant based in Kilkenny with a branch in Cullahill, Co. Laois. For over 150 years the company has been providing quality products for the local farming communities.
Our experienced and qualified sales team continue to offer expert advice in agronomy, nutrition and feed to local farmers. Our aim is to deliver superior quality products that maximise profit for our customers. Our products include animal feeds, fertiliser, seeds, agrochemicals and hardware. We at Daltons take pride in the services we offer our customers.
Daltons have one of the most modern drying and storage facilities for Malting Barley in the country and is approved by Diageo, Irish Distillers, Boortmalt and the Malting Company of Ireland.

Our History

Established in 1870 by John Dalton, the mill was located, first on the banks of the River Nore, in the shadow of Green’s Bridge and now at Chancellor’s Mills, Freshford Road, Kilkenny. The mill in Vicar Street was run by water and had no electricity only gas. John’s son Billy took over the business in the 1948 and recalls that “at that time we were milling for farmers who would bring in a bag of wheat and a bag of oats and we would make a bag of oatmeal for them and charge a commission on each bag”. In the fifties the business offered a range of feed for cattle, pigs and chickens.

The company purchased it’s current site on the Freshford Road in 1960. The first store was built in 1960-61. Billy recalls that “It was a hell of a big move and needed because of the floods in Vicar Street, which hit two or three times every year. We haven’t looked back. We were working both places and completed the move in 1969”.

Through the last four decades Billy and his sons have continued to invest in the facility in Kilkenny and today offer their customers a wide range of services from general hardware through veterinary products and high quality animal feeds. Today the company is run by members of the Dalton family along with a group of professional sales and administration personnel ensuring that Daltons continue to offer superb service to our customers.

Our Team

John Dalton – Managing Director

John has been Managing Director of John Dalton & Sons Ltd, Chancellors Mills for over 25 years. He is a past president of the Irish Seed Trade and a former president of Irish Grain and Feed Association (IGFA) and a board member of the Cereal Association of Ireland.

Denis Dalton – Sales

Denis bring many years of experience to the family business. Following a stint in the grain industry in Australia, Denis brought home many innovative ideas and has successfully implemented them into the Kilkenny facility. In addition to his project management role, Denis manages the sales team and brings a wealth of experience, expertise and advise to the local farming community.
